Having graduated with an MA in sociology from Edinburgh University in 2002, I became a manager, then a project manager in an NHS Mental Health Trust. After 2 years, I realised it was not for me! I wanted something creative and practical... I re-trained as a carpenter and moved into the world of design and production of, what I hope will be, the heirlooms you can pass down to your children!
In 2008 I joined Barnaby Stone as a director of Barnaby Stone Ltd and, for four and a half years, we worked together designing and making beautiful, practical furniture for our clients. In July 2012 Barnaby started work as a designer with Plain English (a firm who make excellent quality kitchens). I wanted to carry on the company and so 'Made by Tom bruce Ltd' was born.
I am passionate about quality. I like to think my work represents the best of traditional craftsmanship. I am not shy of using the very latest production techniques, but not at the cost of quality and It is important that what I make for you works both practically and aesthetically.
I have devoted years to developing the best solutions for furnishing a room. Aesthetically, the use of line and proportion figure prominently in my approach. Where wood grain is a feature I am meticulous in choosing grain patterns and matches. Whilst my own style is best described as modern I am equally qualified to work in sympathy with any period of design.
I use the highest quality materials and wherever possible, timber stock is either PEFC or FSC certificated. I use only the best ironmongery and moving parts in order to ensure you get the longest possible period of easy trouble free use.
